Kareem Darwish is Resident Fellow in Science, Technology, and International Affairs at Georgetown University in Qatar for the 2026–27 academic year. He is also Principal Scientist at the Qatar Computing Research Institute.
Previously, he was Principal Scientist at aiXplain and held research positions at Microsoft’s Cairo Innovation Lab and IBM’s Human Language Technologies group in Cairo. His research focuses on Arabic large language models, natural language processing, information retrieval, and computational social science. He has developed Arabic-language tools for part-of-speech tagging, named-entity recognition, automatic diacritization, sentiment analysis, and parsing. His work also examines stance detection, online propaganda, and malicious behavior on social media.
He received his PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of Maryland.
