Ankushi Mitra is a Doctoral Fellow at Georgetown University in Qatar for the 2026–27 academic year.
Previously, she was the inaugural Predoctoral Fellow of the John Parke Young Initiative on the Global Political Economy at Occidental College. Her research examines how states use citizenship, migration, and borders to shape political coalitions, state-building, and political survival.
Ankushi studies how states decide who belongs: how governments use citizenship, migration, and borders as instruments of coalition-building and political survival, and how these regimes of recognition transform the states that build them. Her dissertation, Rule by Recognition, draws on research in East Africa to show how recognition operates as a currency of rule in global south settings.
She received her MS in International Development from Trinity College Dublin and her BS in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and is pursuing a PhD in Government at Georgetown University.
