Join a unique GU-Q program conveyed by Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, the oldest and most distinguished school of international affairs in the U.S., ranked number one globally by Foreign Policy magazine for master’s programs in international relations. 

Through a rigorous curriculum grounded in international relations scholarship, with an emphasis on security studies and the politics of Qatar and the region, MA-IPAS-Q challenges students to master theory and apply their knowledge to the most pressing issues in international politics and security. The program will also instill a commitment to research and to service across the professional and scholarly communities.

About the program

The MA-IPAS-Q at Georgetown University in Qatar prepares emerging scholars, practitioners, and future policy leaders to engage with the most pressing regional and global challenges in international politics and security.

What you will learn

Grounded in International Relations, with a focus on security studies and the geopolitics of the region, the program equips students with advanced theoretical knowledge and the research competencies needed to conduct original, ethically-based inquiry. Students apply theoretical frameworks to real-world conflict, diplomacy, and governance while learning to communicate complex arguments across academic, professional, and public contexts.

Research you’ll write

Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, students acquire research methods and develop a master’s thesis that produces a substantive contribution to scholarship in international politics or security studies.

Regular or accelerated pathway

We offer two degree tracks, the regular Master’s pathway open to all, and an accelerated pathway to a BSFS/MA for Georgetown University undergraduates.

Graduates are well positioned to take on senior roles across government and public service, including ministries of foreign affairs and defence, diplomatic corps, national security agencies, and public policy institutions. Many pursue careers within multilateral organisations such as the United Nations, the Gulf Cooperation Council, and the Arab League, or within leading think tanks and policy research centres including the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies, the Middle East Council on Global Affairs, and the Brookings Doha Center. Others go on to careers in management consulting, international media, geopolitical risk advisory, and corporate communications, where advanced expertise in international affairs is increasingly in demand.

Doctoral study

For those who wish to continue their academic journey, the program provides a strong foundation for doctoral study at institutions including Georgetown University, the London School of Economics, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, and leading universities across North America, Europe, and Asia.

  • Academic statement of purpose: The statement of purpose is a critical component of the MA-IPSE-Q  application. It should address your intellectual interests as well as your professional and academic goals. Please carefully explain how the program specifically fits into your future academic and professional plans. Do not exceed 500 words. 
  • Three letters of recommendation: Letters should be provided by individuals who can assess the applicant’s qualifications and preparation for graduate studies. Letters of recommendation are to be submitted electronically using the online application system. Personal letters of recommendation, such as those from colleagues, coaches, and family friends, are not accepted.
  • Transcripts: Applicants are required to upload to the application system copies of official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended.

  • Proof of English LanguageIf your undergraduate degree is from an institution where English was not the primary language of instruction, submit either:
    • Official TOEFL results showing 100 minimum on original TOEFL iBT score scale, or 5 minimum on new TOEFL iBT score scale effective January 21, 2026; OR
    • Official IELTS results showing 7.5 minimum score
