How is artificial intelligence reshaping labor markets? Who stands to win—or lose—from the AI revolution, and what are the broader implications for youth, societies, and inequality? Drawing on his research analyzing 1.5 billion online job vacancies, as well as his close tracking of AI-related venture capital investments, Professor Antoniades explores these questions and offers an engaging, insightful, and thought-provoking assessment that challenges and stretches our understanding of the evolving relationship between technology, work, inequality, and societies.

Speakers

Alexis Antoniades

Dr. Alexis Antoniades is Professor, Director, and Chair of International Economics at Georgetown University in Qatar. An expert on the economies of the Gulf countries, his current research focuses on big data, AI, and labor market dynamics. Professor Antoniades previously worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and at Princeton University, where he was awarded the prestigious Niehaus Fellowship. In Qatar Dr. Antoniades regularly advises the leadership of both public and private sector organizations.

From Vision To Practice: Heenat Salma, Sustainability, and Heritage

The Dean’s Distinguished Speaker Series returns this fall with Ambassador Fahad bin Mohammed Al-Attiyah. Ambassador Al-Attiyah previously led Qatar’s National Food Security Programme before serving as Qatar’s Ambassador to Russia and then the United Kingdom. He is also the founder and owner of Caravane Earth and Heenat Salma Farm. Drawing on that experience, Ambassador Al-Attiyah will talk about how Heenat Salma Farm came to be, what he has learned from building it, and how its work connects sustainability with Qatar’s cultural heritage. The conversation will also consider what those lessons might mean for Qatar’s future. Professor Patrick Laude will moderate.

Israel’s Death Penalty: A New Law Targeting Palestinians

This year, Israel adopted a new death penalty law that applies only to Palestinians. In this event, Professor Ralph Wilde will explain what the new offences are and how they seriously violate fundamental rules of international law. Professor Diana Buttu will discuss the long history of Israel’s attempts to pass this law and implications for the West Bank, Israel, and Gaza. Professor Noha Aboueldahab will moderate a discussion between Professors Buttu and Wilde.
