About

Dr. Amira Sonbol, a visionary professor at Georgetown University, was a groundbreaking scholar in Islamic and Middle Eastern studies. With landmark books like Beyond the Exotic and Women, the Family, and Divorce Laws in Islamic History, she shed light on women’s experiences in Muslim societies.

Dr. Sonbol’s classes on Islamic history and women’s rights inspired many students to become leaders in these fields. As the founding editor of HAWWA: Journal of Women of the Middle East and the Islamic World, and a key contributor to the Musawah Institute, she significantly advanced gender studies in Islam.

More than a scholar, Dr. Sonbol was a mentor who passionately supported her students and colleagues. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched and the knowledge she shared.
