Nesrine Basheer is Visiting Associate Teaching Professor of Arabic at Georgetown University in Qatar for the 2026–27 academic year.
Previously, she was Associate Professor of Teaching in Arabic at the University of British Columbia, where she founded the Modern Arabic Language Program. Her research focuses on sociolinguistic competence among learners of Arabic, Arabic language assessment, and the experiences of Arabic-speaking students at English-dominant universities. Her teaching and scholarship challenge hierarchies that privilege Modern Standard Arabic over spoken varieties and emphasize Arabic intellectual traditions as sites of scholarly inquiry.
She received her PhD in Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures from the University of Texas at Austin.
