8 Faculty teams selected for inaugural DC-Doha research grants
Eight faculty-led projects have received funding through a new Georgetown initiative designed to deepen research collaboration between faculty in its Washington, DC, and Doha campuses.
Georgetown launched the DC–Doha Collaborative Research Grant Program earlier this year to advance joint research, academic gatherings, early-stage project development and curriculum innovation at Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) and in DC. The program seeks to promote interdisciplinary exchange, student engagement and projects with the potential to grow into externally funded research, said Jeff Urbach, vice provost for research.
“These awards are about making it easier for faculty in DC and Doha to collaborate on ideas they are already eager to pursue,” Urbach said. “They provide support for teams to test ideas, develop shared agendas, and build toward work with lasting scholarly impact.”
Together, the selected projects span business, international affairs, public policy, history, technology, migration, political economy, curriculum development and regional studies, reflecting the range of scholarly exchange the program was created to support.
“I am pleased to see these projects bring different fields of inquiry into conversation with one another,” said Interim Provost Soyica Colbert. “The exchange benefits from the multiple vantage points of investigators and is central to Georgetown’s academic mission and to the research culture we continue to build.”
“This program reflects the close academic relationship between Doha and Washington,” said Clyde Wilcox, acting dean of GU-Q. “It gives faculty more ways to work together and gives students a closer view of research as it develops.”
As the funded projects begin, the program is positioned to serve as a launchpad for new research partnerships across Georgetown, Urbach said.
The eight proposals selected for funding and their associated faculty teams are:
