Doha-based Hoyas welcome new Georgetown University president Eduardo Peñalver
The Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) community is delighted to welcome President Eduardo M. Peñalver as he begins his tenure as the 49th President of Georgetown University.
As President Peñalver embarks on this new chapter of leadership, we join the global Georgetown community in celebrating his commitment to Georgetown’s Jesuit, Catholic tradition and dedication to academic excellence. His vision for a university grounded in intellectual openness, dialogue across differences, and care for the whole person resonates deeply with our campus in Doha.

President Peñalver has spoken thoughtfully about the opportunities and challenges facing higher education—from advances in artificial intelligence and evolving approaches to teaching and research to the importance of academic freedom and preparing students to lead with purpose in a rapidly changing world. These priorities align closely with GU-Q’s commitment to educating globally minded leaders who engage thoughtfully with the complex issues shaping our region and the world.
As President Peñalver wrote in his message to the Georgetown community, “Georgetown stands apart as a place where relevant research advances understanding and changes the world; where diverse people and perspectives are celebrated; where dialogue thrives; and where the pursuit of knowledge is given deeper meaning by our commitment to both faith and reason.” This vision reflects the values that define the Georgetown experience in Qatar, where teaching, research, public engagement, and intercultural dialogue prepare students to lead with wisdom, purpose, and service.
